The metal exterior of the Triphinx is completely impenetrable. It is speculated that it is actually an organic creature piloting some sort of exoskeleton or transport vessel.
In the novel The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, the Martian invaders are portrayed as piloting huge metal combat vehicles. These “Tripods” have three long legs for traversal and can emit deadly heat rays.
