The Amphare is little more than a living battery, having formed “limbs” by suspending scrap iron in the air around its body. It is not clear what first caused it to gain sentience.
The term “battery” is believed to have been coined by inventor Benjamin Franklin in the 18th century, a word borrowed from a military terminology.
